Tropical Pitcher Plant “Monkey Jugs” 🐒🪴
The Nepenthes Alata often nicknamed Monkey Jugs is a fascinating tropical carnivore that’s equal parts beauty and beast. With elegant cascading vines and striking, fluid filled pitchers that lure and digest insects, this plant is nature’s own pest control and a total showstopper in any collection.
A hybrid between Nepenthes ventrata and Nepenthes alata, it’s both hardy and visually stunning perfect for anyone ready to dip their toes into the world of carnivorous plants.
✨ Why we love it:
🌱 Unique, sculptural pitchers that act as natural insect traps
🌱 Beautifully coloured pitchers, green with deep red tones as they mature
🌱 Easy to care for compared to other Nepenthes species
🌱 Fast growing and perfect for hanging baskets or bright windows
🌱 The ultimate conversation piece for any plant lover
💡 Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. A few hours of gentle morning or late afternoon sun help maintain vibrant pitcher colouration.
💧 Water: Keep soil damp at all times using rainwater, distilled, or filtered water, tap water can harm the plant due to mineral build up. Never let it dry out completely.
🌱 Humidity: Loves high humidity (60-80%). Ideal for bathrooms, terrariums, or near a humidifier to keep those pitchers thriving.
🌡️ Temperature: Enjoys warm conditions between 18-28°c. Avoid cold draughts or temperatures below 12°C.
🚫 Toxicity: Non toxic, safe for pets and curious humans, though not so safe for flies! 🪰
🌿 Top Tip: Don’t feed it fertiliser, the pitchers do all the work! If indoors, you can drop the occasional dead insect into a pitcher to keep it fuelled and happy.
