Aglaonema Information
Natural Habitat
Aglaonema plants grow naturally in the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
In the wild they grow along the forest floor beneath the canopy of larger trees, where they receive filtered light, warm temperatures and consistent humidity.
Because of this environment, they are naturally adapted to indoor conditions and do not require direct sunlight to thrive.
Growth Habit
Aglaonema grow as upright clumping plants, producing new leaves from a central stem.
Over time they form a fuller plant with multiple stems and lush foliage. Most varieties remain relatively compact, which makes them perfect for desks, shelves and plant displays.
Growth is typically steady rather than fast, with most plants producing new leaves during spring and summer.
Aglaonema Care Guide
Light - Place Aglaonema plants in bright, indirect light for the best foliage colour and healthy growth. They can tolerate moderate to lower light conditions.
Water - Water when the top few centimetres of soil begin to dry. Aglaonema prefer lightly moist soil but should never sit in standing water.
Humidity - Prefers moderate humidity but adapts well to normal indoor conditions.
Temperature - Thrives between 18-26°C. Protect from cold draughts, sudden temperature drops
Soil - Use a well draining houseplant compost that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Feeding - Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser.
Propagation - Aglaonema can be propagated by division during repotting. Separate rooted sections carefully and pot them individually to grow new plants.
Common Problems
Yellow Leaves
Usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown Leaf Tips
Often linked to dry air or inconsistent watering.
Drooping Leaves
The plant may need water or could be reacting to sudden temperature changes.
Top Tip
Aglaonema prefer stable conditions. Once you find a bright, comfortable spot where they’re happy, try not to move them around too often. Consistency keeps them growing steadily.
Fun Fact
Aglaonema have been grown as ornamental houseplants for over a century and are widely considered one of the most reliable foliage plants for indoor environments.
Are Aglaonema good beginner houseplants?
Yes. Aglaonema, often called Chinese Evergreen plants, are considered one of the easiest tropical houseplants to grow indoors.
They tolerate lower light conditions and occasional missed watering, making them a great choice for beginners or anyone building their first indoor jungle.
How big do Aglaonema plants grow?
Most Aglaonema grow into compact, upright plants that reach around 30-60cm tall depending on the variety.
They grow slowly and steadily, producing new leaves from the centre of the plant over time.
Do Aglaonema need lots of light?
No. Aglaonema naturally grow on the shaded forest floor, so they tolerate moderate to lower light conditions well.
However, brighter indirect light will usually produce stronger foliage colour and more active growth.
Why are Aglaonema called Chinese Evergreen plants?
The name Chinese Evergreen refers to the plant’s reputation for being long lived, hardy and evergreen indoors.
Aglaonema have been popular houseplants for decades because they keep their foliage year round and adapt well to indoor environments.
Are Aglaonema toxic to children and pets?
Yes. Like many tropical foliage plants, Aglaonema contain compounds that can be harmful if ingested. They should be kept out of reach of pets and young children.
How fast do Aglaonema grow?
Aglaonema are considered moderate growers. During spring and summer they will regularly produce new leaves, while growth slows during autumn and winter.
Do Aglaonema plants flower?
Yes, although it is less common indoors. Mature plants can produce small flowers similar to other members of the Araceae family, followed by decorative berries. Most growers keep them for their foliage rather than flowers.
