Asparagus Setaceus

Asparagus Fern Information

Natural Habitat

Asparagus setaceus is native to southern Africa, where it grows in warm climates with filtered light and consistent moisture.

Growth Habit

This plant produces fine, needle like foliage along thin arching stems. As it matures, it forms a full, cascading shape. Growth is strongest in warmer months and slows in winter.

Asparagus Fern - Full Care Guide

Light - Place in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the delicate foliage.

Water - Keep compost lightly moist. Do not allow it to dry out fully, as this can cause leaf drop.

Humidity - Prefers moderate to higher humidity. Regular misting or grouping with other plants can help.

Temperature - Thrives between 18-24°C. Avoid cold air and sudden temperature changes.

Soil - Use a well draining houseplant compost that retains light moisture.

Feeding - Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

Propagation - Can be propagated by division during repotting. Separate the root ball carefully to create new plants.

Is Asparagus Fern a true fern?

No. Despite its name, Asparagus setaceus is not a true fern. It belongs to the asparagus family but has similar delicate foliage.

Why is my Asparagus Fern turning yellow?

Yellowing is often caused by underwatering or very dry air. Keep soil consistently moist and increase humidity if needed.

Can Asparagus Fern be grown as a hanging plant?

Yes. Its arching stems make it ideal for hanging pots or elevated shelves where it can trail naturally.

Does Asparagus Fern grow quickly?

It grows steadily during spring and summer, especially in bright, indirect light.

Top Tip

If your Asparagus Fern starts to look sparse, trim back older stems in spring. Fresh growth will fill in quickly and restore its full, feathery look.
