African Bow String Hemp

Sansevieria hyacinthoides

Sansevieria Hyacinthoides, commonly known as African Bow String Hemp, is a tough, upright houseplant with tall sword shaped leaves marked in deep green with subtle patterning. If you want height, presence and serious low maintenance energy, this one delivers.

Native to tropical regions of Africa, this resilient indoor plant thrives in bright, indirect light but will happily tolerate lower light conditions too. It’s drought tolerant, adaptable and well suited to real UK homes where watering routines are not always perfect.

As it matures, African Bow String Hemp grows in upright clumps, adding vertical structure without spreading wildly. It’s ideal for corners, bedrooms, offices or anywhere that needs greenery without constant attention.

If you want a plant that quietly gets on with it and still looks strong year round, Sansevieria Hyacinthoides is a reliable choice.

USEFUL INFORMATION, CARE GUIDE & FAQS

African Bow String Hemp

Sansevieria Hyacinthoides Information

Natural Habitat

Sansevieria hyacinthoides is native to tropical regions of Africa. It grows in dry, rocky and sandy environments where rainfall can be irregular. This explains its excellent drought tolerance indoors.

Growth Habit

African Bow String Hemp grows upright from a rhizome, producing tall, sword shaped leaves in clumps. Over time it may produce offsets, forming a fuller base. Growth is steady during spring and summer and slows in winter.

Sansevieria Hyacinthoides - Full Care Guide

Light

Performs best in bright, indirect light but tolerates moderate to low light conditions.

Water

Allow soil to dry completely before watering. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

Humidity

Thrives in average household humidity and does not require misting.

Temperature

Prefers 16 to 27°C. Protect from frost and cold draughts.

Soil

Use a free draining compost. Adding perlite or grit improves drainage.

Feeding

Feed lightly once a month during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.

Propagation

Can be propagated by division of offsets or leaf cuttings. Offsets are the quickest method and establish reliably when separated and repotted.

Is Sansevieria Hyacinthoides easy to care for?

Yes. It is one of the most forgiving houseplants available. It tolerates irregular watering, lower light and dry indoor air.

How often should I water African Bow String Hemp?

Water only when the compost has fully dried out. In winter this may mean watering far less frequently.

Can Sansevieria Hyacinthoides grow in low light?

It tolerates low light well, although growth will be slower. Brighter positions encourage stronger growth and colour.

Why are my leaves turning soft or yellow?

This is usually a sign of overwatering. Ensure the compost drains freely and allow the soil to dry fully between waterings.

Top Tip

When in doubt, do not water. Sansevieria Hyacinthoides copes far better with drought than with soggy compost.
