Natural Habitat

Sansevieria hyacinthoides is native to tropical regions of Africa. It grows in dry, rocky and sandy environments where rainfall can be irregular. This explains its excellent drought tolerance indoors.

Growth Habit

African Bow String Hemp grows upright from a rhizome, producing tall, sword shaped leaves in clumps. Over time it may produce offsets, forming a fuller base. Growth is steady during spring and summer and slows in winter.

Light

Performs best in bright, indirect light but tolerates moderate to low light conditions.

Water

Allow soil to dry completely before watering. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

Humidity

Thrives in average household humidity and does not require misting.

Temperature

Prefers 16 to 27°C. Protect from frost and cold draughts.

Soil

Use a free draining compost. Adding perlite or grit improves drainage.

Feeding

Feed lightly once a month during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.

Propagation

Can be propagated by division of offsets or leaf cuttings. Offsets are the quickest method and establish reliably when separated and repotted.

Yes. It is one of the most forgiving houseplants available. It tolerates irregular watering, lower light and dry indoor air.

Water only when the compost has fully dried out. In winter this may mean watering far less frequently.

It tolerates low light well, although growth will be slower. Brighter positions encourage stronger growth and colour.

This is usually a sign of overwatering. Ensure the compost drains freely and allow the soil to dry fully between waterings.

When in doubt, do not water. Sansevieria Hyacinthoides copes far better with drought than with soggy compost.
