NOT EVERY DARKER SPOT IS THE SAME

Start With the Light You Actually Have

A north facing room, a shelf three metres from a window and a completely windowless office are three very different growing conditions.

Look at the exact position where the plant will live, then choose around that.

WHAT DOES LOW LIGHT ACTUALLY MEAN?

Dimmer Does Not Mean Dark

Your eyes and your plant do not measure light in the same way.

A room can feel perfectly bright to us while still providing relatively little usable light to a houseplant. Low light tolerant plants are simply better able to cope with those conditions than more light demanding species.

01 POSITION

Judge the exact spot where the plant will live, not the room as a whole.

02 DISTANCE

Light levels usually drop significantly as you move further from a window.

03 WATER

Lower light often means slower water use, so check before watering.

04 LIMITS

Complete darkness needs a suitable artificial grow light.

GOT NO WINDOW AT ALL?

Then You Need Another Light Source

Houseplants need light for photosynthesis. If a room has no usable natural light, even a low light tolerant plant will normally need a suitable grow light to keep growing properly.

LOW LIGHT HOUSEPLANTS

A Few Things You Might Want to Know

What Does “Low Light” Mean for a Houseplant? +

Low light generally means a position receiving limited indirect natural light and little or no direct sunlight.

A room can appear bright to us while still providing relatively little usable light for a plant. Low light tolerant plants can cope with these conditions better than many other species.

What Are Good Houseplants for Low Light? +

Some reliable lower light tolerant options can include ZZ plants, snake plants, Aglaonema, Aspidistra, Pothos and selected palms and ferns.

The best choice still depends on temperature, humidity, available light and how much care you want to give it.

Can Houseplants Live in a Room With No Windows? +

Not without another suitable light source.

Houseplants need light for photosynthesis, so a completely windowless room will normally require an appropriate grow light.

If you are unsure whether enough light reaches your space, send us a photo or ask us before choosing a plant.

Do Low Light Houseplants Need Less Water? +

Often, yes. A plant growing in lower light will generally use water more slowly than the same plant growing in brighter conditions.

That means the growing medium can stay wet for longer, so avoid watering purely to a fixed schedule. Check the plant and compost first.

What Are Good Low Light Plants for an Office? +

ZZ plants, snake plants, Aglaonema and other adaptable foliage plants can work well in offices with limited natural light, depending on the individual space.

You can also explore Office Plants for more workplace friendly options.

How Do I Know if My Room Is Too Dark for a Plant? +

Look at how much natural light actually reaches the proposed plant position during the day rather than judging how bright the room feels overall.

If you are unsure, send us a photo, visit Oh Shoot! Plants in Congleton or speak to our Plant Clinic for practical help with positioning and light levels.

Can I Order Low Light Houseplants for UK Delivery? +

Yes. Many of the plants in this collection can be ordered online for delivery across the UK, subject to the delivery options shown on each individual product.

Check the individual care information so you can make sure the plant suits the actual light conditions in your home.

NOT SURE HOW DARK YOUR SPACE REALLY IS?

Send Us a Photo

Tell us which direction the window faces, roughly how far the plant will sit from it and what the room is like during the day.

We’ll help you work out whether a low light plant is suitable or whether the spot needs a different solution.
