Check the nursery pot, decide whether you need a decorative cover pot or a new growing container, then think about drainage and stability.
Start with the diameter of the existing nursery pot. A cover pot should be slightly wider so the plant can sit inside comfortably.
If you are planting directly into a pot, drainage holes usually help excess water escape rather than collect around the roots.
