Bonsai Money Tree loves plenty of bright indirect light.

An east or west facing window works beautifully, while a brighter south facing room normally works best with the plant sitting slightly back from the glass.

A little gentle morning or evening sunshine is normally fine once the plant has adjusted.

Too little light usually means longer weaker stems, larger gaps between leaves and a canopy that starts losing that lovely compact shape.

Good light makes keeping this little Jungle tree looking like a little tree considerably easier.

Let the upper few centimetres of compost begin to dry before watering again.

When it is ready, water thoroughly and allow all the excess to escape from the pot.

Because bonsai style Pachira often grow in smaller pots, they can dry more quickly than larger Money Trees during warm bright conditions, so keep an eye on the compost rather than assuming the watering will be the same.

Through the darker UK winter months, growth slows and the pot usually stays damp for longer.

Check the compost, not the calendar.

Tiny tree or giant tree, Pachira still has absolutely no idea what day watering day is.

Nope. This little tree is pretty easy going about its drinks.

Ordinary UK tap water is normally perfectly suitable.

In very hard water areas, occasional rainwater or suitable filtered water can help reduce heavy mineral buildup, but watering frequency and root health matter far more.

Save the fancy water for the proper divas in the Jungle.

Bonsai Money Tree wants a substrate that holds some useful moisture while still allowing plenty of air around the roots.

A good peat free houseplant compost mixed with ingredients such as perlite, pumice or fine bark works really well.

The smaller pot means drainage matters even more because there is less room for mistakes.

You want moisture. You do not want a tiny pot of swamp.

Feed while the plant is actively growing.

During spring and summer, use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser around once a month.

Reduce or stop feeding when growth slows through autumn and winter.

Do not try to force faster growth with loads of fertiliser.

This is one plant where controlled healthy growth is actually the whole point.

Bonsai Money Tree does not need a huge pot.

Repot when the roots have properly filled the existing container, watering has become difficult or the compost has started breaking down.

Move up by one sensible pot size and keep the overall proportions neat if you want to preserve that compact tree look.

Spring is usually a good time while stronger growth is beginning.

A bigger pot is not automatically better.

Sometimes tiny tree life is perfectly comfortable exactly where it is.

This is where Bonsai Money Tree becomes particularly fun.

Long shoots can be trimmed back during active growth to maintain the size and shape of the canopy.

Make clean cuts just above a leaf or growing point and the plant can produce fresh branching below the cut.

You can keep the canopy rounded and compact or let certain branches develop a little further depending on the shape you prefer.

Do not remove huge amounts of healthy growth all at once.

Little trims are much easier on the plant and give you far more control over how your tiny Jungle tree develops.

Those glossy green leaflets look much better without a layer of dust hiding them.

Gently wipe each leaflet with a soft damp cloth or our microfibre dusting gloves when needed, supporting the leaf as you clean so you do not crease or damage the stems.

Give the undersides a quick look at the same time for any unwanted visitors.

No leaf shine required. Pachira already does glossy perfectly well on its own.

Bonsai Money Tree can be propagated from healthy stem cuttings.

Take a section of fresh mature growth containing several nodes and root it in water or an airy propagation mix somewhere warm with plenty of bright indirect light.

A propagated cutting will grow as a normal Pachira aquatica plant.

It does not automatically become bonsai.

The compact little tree form comes from how you grow, prune and shape it over time.

Yellow leaves

One older leaf yellowing occasionally is nothing unusual.

Several yellow leaves together can mean the compost has been staying wet for too long, light is too low or the roots are under stress.

Sudden leaf drop

Pachira can react to sudden changes in light, temperature, watering or position by dropping foliage.

Check the basics and give it time to settle before changing everything at once.

Check watering consistency, root health, very dry air and possible mineral buildup.

The canopy is getting thin

The plant may need stronger light or a little strategic pruning to encourage fresh branching.

Long stretched stems

This usually means the plant is reaching for stronger light.

Move it somewhere brighter and prune back stretched growth if needed.

The trunk feels soft

This deserves attention.

Healthy trunks should feel firm. Softness near the base can indicate rot, particularly if the compost has remained wet for too long.

The bonsai shape is disappearing

Nothing has gone wrong.

Your Pachira is simply doing what trees do and growing.

Trim back the longer shoots and shape the canopy again.

Spider mites can appear when conditions are particularly warm and dry. Look underneath the leaves for pale speckling, very fine webbing and tiny moving mites.

Mealybugs may hide around leaf joints, stems and sheltered parts of the canopy as little white cottony patches.

Scale insects can attach to stems and leaves as fixed brown or tan bumps.

Fungus gnats may appear around compost that stays consistently damp. Larger numbers are usually a useful reminder to check how slowly the pot is drying.

A small canopy makes pest checks nice and easy, so give the leaves and trunk a quick look whenever you water.

Tiny plant means there really is no excuse for letting a tiny pest Jungle get established.
