What is a Bonsai Money Tree?
A Bonsai Money Tree is Pachira aquatica that has been grown and pruned into a compact tree form.
It is the same species as a standard Money Tree. The smaller size comes from training, pruning, pot size and ongoing care rather than it being a naturally miniature species.
Is a Bonsai Money Tree the same as Pachira aquatica?
Yes.
Bonsai Money Tree is simply Pachira aquatica maintained in a smaller trained form.
Given more root space and less pruning, it can gradually grow much more like a standard Money Tree.
Is a Pachira aquatica bonsai easy to care for?
Yes. We would happily put a Pachira aquatica bonsai in the easy care camp.
Give it plenty of useful light, sensible watering, warmth and the occasional trim and it is much easier to live with than many plants elsewhere in the Jungle.
How big does a Bonsai Money Tree grow indoors?
If regularly pruned and maintained, around 30-60cm is a useful indoor size for many Bonsai Money Trees.
Its eventual size depends heavily on pot size, light and how often you prune it. If you stop shaping the plant and give it more root space, Pachira aquatica can gradually become considerably larger.
Will a Bonsai Money Tree stay small forever?
Only if you keep maintaining it.
Fresh shoots will naturally extend over time, so regular pruning is what keeps the canopy compact and tree shaped.
The good news is that Pachira aquatica normally responds well to trimming, making its size relatively easy to manage indoors.
How much light does a Money Tree bonsai need?
A Money Tree bonsai does best in plenty of bright indirect light.
Gentle morning or evening sunshine can normally be tolerated once the plant has adjusted, but avoid harsh summer midday sun through glass.
It can survive lower light, but growth may become thinner and more stretched and the compact bonsai shape becomes harder to maintain.
How often should I water a Pachira aquatica bonsai?
There is no fixed watering schedule.
Allow the upper few centimetres of compost to begin drying before watering thoroughly and letting the excess drain away.
Because a Pachira aquatica bonsai may be growing in a relatively small pot, check the compost a little more frequently during warm bright weather rather than automatically watering on the same day each week.
How do I keep a Bonsai Money Tree compact?
Good light and regular pruning are the two biggest things.
Trim longer shoots back during active growth to keep the canopy dense and encourage fresh branching. Make clean cuts just above a healthy leaf or growing point and avoid removing large amounts of healthy foliage in one go.
Spring and summer are usually the best times for more substantial shaping.
Why are the leaves on my Money Tree turning yellow?
An occasional older yellow leaf is completely normal.
Several yellow leaves appearing together can point towards compost staying wet for too long, poor light, cold temperatures or root stress.
Check the compost and growing conditions before automatically watering again. Pachira can also shed a few leaves after being moved or following a sudden environmental change.
Is Pachira aquatica safe for cats and dogs?
Pachira aquatica is generally considered non toxic to cats and dogs.
We would still discourage pets from chewing the foliage because eating plant material can cause digestive upset even when the plant itself is not considered toxic.
Better for the pet, and definitely better for the tiny tree.
Does a Bonsai Money Tree need special bonsai soil?
Not necessarily.
For most indoor Pachira, an airy, well drained houseplant mix works perfectly well. The roots need access to moisture without being left sitting in dense wet compost.
If your plant is growing in a very shallow traditional bonsai container, a more open bonsai style substrate can be useful because the pot will hold and lose moisture differently.
Can a Bonsai Money Tree grow into a normal Money Tree?
Yes.
A Bonsai Money Tree is still Pachira aquatica underneath all the pruning and shaping.
If you move it into a larger pot, give the roots more room and stop regularly trimming the new growth, it can gradually become taller and behave much more like a standard Money Tree.
