More About the Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated

Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated combines the naturally dark, metallic looking foliage of Alocasia azlanii with irregular white or cream markings. The species originates from Brunei on Borneo and is known for its compact growth, coppery purple tones and distinctive pinkish veins.

New leaves may emerge with softer colouring before developing their mature appearance. The white variegation varies naturally, so the next leaf won't necessarily match the last. Like other jewel Alocasia, it appreciates warmth, bright indirect light, suitable humidity and an airy growing mix. It may grow more slowly during winter and can occasionally enter dormancy when conditions become less favourable.

A lovely plant for collectors who enjoy unusual foliage without needing room for enormous leaves.

OH SHOOT PLANT KNOWLEDGE

Good to Know

01 WHERE IT COMES FROM

Habitat & Environment

Alocasia azlanii is a tropical species native to Brunei on the island of Borneo, where it grows in warm, humid forest environments. Known for its dark, metallic looking foliage with distinctive reddish purple veins. Its naturally compact size makes it one of the smaller jewel Alocasia.

The Albo Variegated form adds areas of white or cream to the leaves. These markings arise in cultivation and can vary considerably between new leaves. At home, that tropical background gives us a useful starting point.

Warmth, filtered light, airy roots and fairly steady moisture will help your Azlanii settle in. It might be small, but this is one Jungle resident with very specific opinions about the temperature.

02 LEAF LONGEVITY

Long Time Leaves

Azlanii Albo sits towards the middle of our Long Time Leaves scale. Healthy foliage can last for many months, but Alocasia naturally replace older leaves as they grow.

Young plants may carry fewer leaves, occasionally losing an older one while producing fresh growth. With consistent warmth, suitable light and healthy roots, established plants can maintain a fuller display.

Keep healthy leaves even when they show less variegation or minor damage. A greener leaf is still helping the whole plant grow.

03 WATER CHECK

Tap Water Diva?

Azlanii Albo sits around the middle of our Tap Water Diva scale. Ordinary tap water may be suitable, but consistently hard water can contribute to mineral buildup in the compost over time.

Rainwater or another suitable low mineral water can be useful if your local supply is particularly mineral rich. Allow very cold water to reach room temperature before watering.

Brown edges or damaged leaves aren't automatically caused by tap water. Check humidity, watering consistency, roots and light before changing the water source. The most important thing is giving the plant the right amount of water at the right time.

04 KEEP IT LOOKING GOOD

Leaf Cleaning & Dusting

Azlanii's dark, glossy foliage can show dust, particularly when it's growing in a warm indoor environment. Use a soft, slightly damp cloth to gently remove dust from the leaves. Support each leaf underneath while cleaning to avoid putting pressure on the delicate stalks.

Avoid rubbing aggressively over the pale variegated areas or newly developing leaves. A gentle rinse with lukewarm water can also help when needed, provided excess water drains away and the plant has suitable airflow afterwards.

Skip leaf shine products. The naturally metallic looking foliage already has plenty going on. Leaf cleaning is also a useful opportunity to check underneath for spider mites and other pests.

PLANT SPECIFICS

Additional Information

The appearance of Azlanii Albo foliage can change as the leaves mature.

Young leaves may emerge with softer colours before developing their deeper green, coppery and purple tones. The amount of white variegation can also change considerably between leaves, and greener growth should not automatically be removed. This Alocasia is naturally compact, so leaf size and colour are generally more useful indicators of development than expecting it to become a towering floor plant.

Under cooler conditions, growth may slow or the plant may enter dormancy. An established plant can also produce offsets or corms, although these do not guarantee identical variegation. Give new growth time to develop before deciding what the plant is doing.

!

DID YOU KNOW?

Alocasia azlanii was formally described as a species in 2016, making it a relatively recent addition to the botanical record. Its natural foliage is already unusual, with metallic looking green and coppery tones alongside striking pinkish purple veins. The Albo form adds white variegation to that combination.

Apparently, ordinary green leaves weren't quite enough for this one.

OH SHOOT TOP GROWING TIP

Keep an eye on the corm and growing point rather than judging your Azlanii by its oldest leaf.

Alocasia naturally replace foliage as they grow, and a plant can remain healthy even when an older leaf begins to yellow.

If winter brings slower growth or leaf loss, check that the corm remains firm and the roots are healthy before assuming the worst.

Warmth, suitable moisture and patience can make a considerable difference.

And remember, a mostly green leaf is still doing an important job. It helps provide energy for all those beautiful white markings.

KEEP YOUR JUNGLE HAPPY

Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated Care Guide

☀️ Light+

Give Azlanii Albo plenty of bright indirect light.

An east facing window can work well, while stronger sunshine from a south or west facing window may need filtering.

Protect the leaves from harsh direct sunlight, particularly where large white sections are present.

A suitable grow light can be helpful in darker UK homes, especially during winter.

Keep the light at an appropriate distance, following the manufacturer's guidance.

Good light supports healthy growth, but it cannot guarantee stronger variegation or particular colours on new leaves.

Those markings are allowed to do their own thing.

💧 Water+

Water when the upper few centimetres of compost begin drying, then allow the excess to drain away.

During active growth, Azlanii generally appreciates fairly steady moisture around its roots.

Avoid leaving the entire pot bone dry for extended periods, but don't keep the compost constantly saturated either.

Small pots can dry surprisingly quickly during warm weather, while larger containers may remain damp for longer.

Check the compost before watering rather than following a fixed weekly schedule.

Reduce watering during winter, particularly if growth slows or the plant enters dormancy.

If the leaves begin drooping, check the moisture level and root condition before adding water.

The aim is consistency rather than constant attention.

🚰 Water Quality+

Azlanii Albo sits around the middle of our Tap Water Diva scale. Ordinary tap water may be suitable, but consistently hard water can contribute to mineral buildup in the compost over time.

Rainwater or another suitable low mineral water can be useful if your local supply is particularly mineral rich. Allow very cold water to reach room temperature before watering.

Brown edges or damaged leaves aren't automatically caused by tap water. Check humidity, watering consistency, roots and light before changing the water source. The most important thing is giving the plant the right amount of water at the right time.

💦 Humidity+

Azlanii Albo appreciates moderate to high humidity, particularly during active growth. Around 60 to 80% can provide favourable conditions, although some established plants may adapt to lower household levels.

A suitable plant cabinet or humidifier can help maintain consistent conditions. Good airflow is important, especially when humidity is high. Avoid leaving water sitting on leaves for long periods.

Regular misting isn't necessary and won't provide lasting humidity. If new leaves repeatedly struggle to open or develop dry edges, check humidity alongside light, watering and root health.

🌡️ Temperature+

Azlanii Albo appreciates warm, stable conditions. Around 20 to 28°C is a useful range for active growth.

Aim to keep it above 18°C where possible and protect it from cold draughts, chilly windowsills and sudden temperature changes. Cooler conditions can slow growth and increase the risk of dormancy.

Keep it away from direct radiator heat, which may dry the surrounding air and compost unevenly. For a plant with snow white markings, this particular Azlanii has absolutely no interest in actual snow.

🪴 Soil & Substrate+

Azlanii Albo prefers an airy, freely draining growing mix that retains a little moisture around the roots.

Peat free houseplant compost combined with fine orchid bark and perlite or pumice is a good starting point.

Fine components are particularly useful for small plants because they allow the compost to sit comfortably around delicate roots.

The bark and mineral components help create air spaces, reducing the risk of the roots remaining saturated.

Avoid heavy garden soil or dense compost that stays wet for long periods.

Always use a pot with drainage holes.

If your plant sits inside a decorative cover pot, empty any water left at the bottom after watering.

The aim is gently moist roots with plenty of air around them.

🌱 Feeding+

Feed during active growth with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser, following the manufacturer's dilution and frequency instructions.

Fresh compost may already contain nutrients, so check before adding extra fertiliser.

Reduce feeding as growth slows and pause during dormancy.

Plants kept warm under suitable grow lights throughout winter may continue growing and benefit from occasional feeding.

Avoid overfeeding, particularly when the plant is small or recently repotted.

Fertiliser supports healthy growth but cannot guarantee more white variegation.

A steady routine is much more useful than trying to persuade the next leaf to be extra white.

🔄 Repotting+

Repot when the roots need more space, the compost has deteriorated or the plant is struggling with its current growing medium.

Choose a pot only slightly larger than the existing one, preferably with plenty of drainage holes.

Use an airy, moisture retaining mix suitable for jewel Alocasia.

Remove the plant carefully, supporting the stem base and avoiding unnecessary damage to the roots.

Keep the crown (the area where leaves emerge from the stem base) at its previous depth rather than burying it deeply in fresh compost.

Spring or early summer is generally a useful time to repot when the plant is actively growing.

Avoid repotting a dormant or recently stressed plant unless there is a clear reason to investigate the roots.

A little more room is helpful when needed. An enormous pot full of wet compost is not.

✂️ Pruning+

Azlanii Albo needs very little routine pruning.

Remove fully yellow or dead leaves with clean, sharp scissors, cutting the leaf stalk without damaging the central growing point.

Avoid removing healthy foliage simply because the variegation isn't as strong as you expected.

Green leaves are important for supporting the plant, particularly when some foliage contains large white areas.

If a leaf has minor damage or a brown edge, it can usually remain until it declines naturally.

Wear gloves when cutting Alocasia, as the sap can irritate sensitive skin.

This one is generally happier producing leaves than having them regularly removed.

✨ Leaf Cleaning & Dusting+

🌿 Propagation+

Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated can be propagated by separating established offsets or growing suitable corms.

Corms are small underground storage structures that can develop their own roots and leaves when conditions are suitable.

When repotting an established plant, carefully inspect the roots and surrounding compost for naturally developed corms.

Healthy corms can be placed in a suitable moist propagation medium, such as sphagnum moss or perlite, and kept warm with bright indirect light.

Maintain moisture without leaving them submerged or saturated, and provide some airflow to reduce the risk of rot.

Once roots and leaves have developed, young plants can be transferred into small pots of airy compost.

White variegation isn't guaranteed to pass from the parent to every corm grown plant. New growth may be greener or develop completely different markings.

Allow the parent plant to become well established before removing corms unnecessarily.

There is no rush. A healthy parent plant is worth considerably more than a propagation experiment that leaves everybody unhappy.

🍂 Seasonal Growth+

Spring

Longer days and warmer temperatures usually encourage fresh growth. Your Azlanii may begin producing new leaves after a quieter winter. Check the compost more regularly as growth increases, and restart feeding once the plant is actively growing.

Spring is also a useful time to inspect the roots, repot if necessary or separate any established offsets (small new plants growing beside the parent). If your Azlanii has spent winter resting beneath the compost, give it warmth and gentle moisture while waiting for new growth to appear.

Summer

Warmth and longer days can encourage stronger growth, with new leaves gradually developing their dark colours and pale markings. Keep the compost lightly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged. Feed according to your fertiliser's instructions and maintain comfortable humidity.

Protect the foliage from harsh direct sunshine, especially the white areas that contain little or no chlorophyll (the green pigment plants use to capture light for growth). Keep an eye on fresh leaves as they open. Azlanii doesn't produce enormous foliage, but it certainly knows how to make each one interesting.

Autumn

Growth may begin slowing as temperatures and daylight levels reduce. Check the compost before watering and gradually reduce feeding if new growth becomes less frequent.

Move the plant away from chilly window glass and draughty positions. If an older leaf begins declining while the rest of the plant remains healthy, check the overall conditions before worrying. Alocasia can naturally replace older foliage as they grow.

Winter

Keep your Azlanii warm, ideally above 18°C, and provide the brightest suitable indirect light available. Water less frequently as growth slows, allowing more of the compost to dry between drinks without leaving an actively growing plant severely dehydrated.

Some Alocasia can enter dormancy. If that happens, check that the underground corm (the swollen stem base that stores energy) remains firm and healthy. A dormant plant needs much less water than one carrying active foliage. Plants kept warm with suitable grow lights may continue growing throughout winter. No new leaves for a while doesn't automatically mean something has gone wrong. Sometimes the Jungle is simply having a quieter season.

⚠️ Common Problems+

White patches turning brown

Pale areas are more vulnerable to stress. Check for harsh sunshine, irregular watering and root problems.

Yellowing lower leaves

May be natural leaf ageing, particularly when new growth is appearing. Several yellow leaves together can indicate a wider problem.

Soft or mushy stem base

Can indicate rot. Check the roots and corm, and remove damaged tissue with sterile tools where appropriate.

Drooping leaves

Check both the moisture level and root health. Dry roots and damaged roots can produce similar symptoms.

Leaves curling inward

May result from moisture stress, low humidity, temperature changes or root problems.

New leaf struggling to open

Often associated with dry air, inconsistent moisture or cool conditions. Maintain suitable conditions and avoid pulling the leaf.

Smaller new leaves

Check light, temperature, nutrients and root health. One smaller leaf after a move is not necessarily a problem.

Loss of several leaves in winter

May indicate seasonal dormancy, cold stress or root problems. Check the corm and growing conditions before deciding how to proceed.

Loss of variegation

New leaves may become greener naturally. Persistent green growth can indicate reversion from the active growing point.

Brown, crispy edges

Can result from dry conditions, uneven watering, mineral accumulation or damaged roots.

Pale speckling and fine webbing

May indicate spider mites. Inspect the undersides of leaves and isolate the plant if pests are present.

Blackening or collapsed foliage

Check for cold exposure, excessive moisture and tissue damage. Rapid deterioration should prompt an inspection of the roots and stem base.

🐛 Pests+

Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated can attract spider mites, thrips, mealybugs and scale insects.

Spider mites can be particularly troublesome on Alocasia. Look for pale speckling, fine webbing and damage to the undersides of leaves.

Thrips may cause silvery patches, dark specks and distorted new growth. Mealybugs appear as white cottony clusters around leaf joints, while scale insects attach themselves to stems and foliage.

Check underneath the leaves, around the central growing point and along the leaf stalks.

If you discover unwanted visitors, isolate the plant from nearby greenery and identify the pest before choosing a treatment.

Use a product suitable for indoor ornamental plants, follow its instructions and test on a small section of foliage first.

Those dark leaves can make damage less obvious at first glance, so a quick inspection during watering is worth making part of your routine.

🐾 Child & Pet Safety+

Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated is harmful if eaten and toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it away from pets and young children who may chew the foliage or stems.

Like other Alocasia, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation and swelling around the mouth and throat if eaten.

Sap may also irritate sensitive skin or eyes, so wear gloves when pruning, repotting or dividing the plant.

Wash your hands after handling damaged plant tissue.

If ingestion occurs, contact a vet or medical professional promptly for advice.

STILL GOT QUESTIONS?

Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated FAQs

What is Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated?

Alocasia Azlanii Albo Variegated is a white variegated form of Alocasia azlanii, a compact tropical species native to Brunei.

It's known for dark green foliage with coppery or purple tones, distinctive pinkish veins and irregular white or cream markings.

The amount and pattern of variegation can differ between individual plants and leaves.

What makes Alocasia Azlanii different from other Alocasia?

Its naturally dark, metallic looking foliage and contrasting pinkish purple veins give it a distinctive appearance.

Unlike larger Elephant Ear varieties, Azlanii remains relatively compact, making it popular among collectors of jewel Alocasia.

The Albo form adds white markings to an already colourful plant.

What does Albo Variegated mean?

Albo refers to white variegation.

These pale areas have little or no chlorophyll (the green pigment plants use to capture light for growth).

Because they contribute less energy to the plant, maintaining healthy green foliage alongside the white markings is important.

Will every new leaf have white variegation?

Not necessarily.

The pattern can change from leaf to leaf, with some producing larger white areas and others developing mostly green foliage.

Variegation can also become reduced or disappear from a particular growing point.

A new leaf's appearance cannot be guaranteed from the markings on an older leaf.

Will my Azlanii produce pink leaves?

The standard species naturally has pinkish purple veins and coppery or violet tones that can change with the light.

Some cultivated forms also develop pink areas, but an Albo labelled plant should not automatically be expected to produce pink variegation.

The colour and pattern of each leaf will depend on the individual plant.

Is Azlanii Albo difficult to care for?

It is better suited to someone with a little houseplant experience, particularly if you've already grown Alocasia.

It appreciates steady warmth, suitable humidity, bright indirect light and careful watering.

It's not impossible to grow outside a specialist cabinet, but it is less forgiving of cold temperatures and watering extremes than many everyday houseplants.

How much light does Azlanii Albo need?

Bright indirect light is ideal.

A position near an east facing window or slightly back from a brighter window can work well.

Protect the leaves from harsh afternoon sunshine, particularly the white areas.

In darker homes, a suitable grow light can help maintain healthy growth.

Will more light create more variegation?

Suitable lighting supports healthy growth, but it cannot guarantee more white markings.

The amount of variegation depends on the individual plant and how its growing tissues develop.

Too much direct sunshine may scorch the foliage rather than improve its appearance.

Can Alocasia Azlanii Albo grow in low light?

It is unlikely to perform particularly well in genuinely low light.

Growth may become slower, new leaves may develop smaller and the plant may struggle to support heavily variegated foliage.

Choose a bright position without exposing the leaves to intense direct sunshine.

Does Azlanii Albo need high humidity?

It appreciates moderate to high humidity, particularly while new leaves are developing.

Around 60 to 80% can provide favourable conditions, although plants may adapt to somewhat lower levels when other care requirements are met.

A humidifier or suitable plant cabinet can help in particularly dry homes.

Can I grow Azlanii Albo outside a plant cabinet?

Yes, provided your home offers suitable warmth, light and humidity.

A warm, bright room away from draughts may work well, especially with a humidifier if the air is dry.

A cabinet can make conditions easier to control, but it isn't an absolute requirement.

Should I mist my Azlanii?

Regular misting is not necessary and does little to provide lasting humidity.

If the room is consistently dry, a humidifier is generally more useful.

Avoid leaving water sitting on the leaves for extended periods, particularly where airflow is limited.

How often should I water Alocasia Azlanii Albo?

Water when the upper few centimetres of compost begin to dry.

Give the plant a thorough drink and allow the excess to drain away.

The frequency will change depending on pot size, temperature, light and the growing mix.

During winter or dormancy, it will usually need considerably less water.

Should the compost stay constantly wet?

No.

Azlanii appreciates some moisture around its roots while actively growing, but permanently saturated compost can cause root damage.

Aim for lightly moist, airy compost rather than a consistently soaked pot.

Drainage and airflow around the roots are particularly important.

Why are my Azlanii leaves curling?

Curling can result from insufficient moisture, dry air, temperature stress or root problems.

Check the compost and growing conditions before changing the watering routine.

New leaves can also appear curled while developing and should gradually open as they mature.

Why is my new leaf stuck?

Fresh Alocasia leaves can struggle to open when conditions are too dry, cool or inconsistent.

Maintain suitable warmth and humidity, and allow the leaf to develop naturally.

Avoid pulling it open, as young foliage is easily damaged.

Why are the white parts turning brown?

White areas contain little or no chlorophyll and can be more vulnerable to environmental stress.

Strong sunshine, watering problems and poor root health can contribute to browning.

Existing brown patches won't turn white again, but improving conditions can help protect future growth.

Why is my Azlanii losing an older leaf?

Alocasia can naturally shed older foliage as they develop new leaves.

One older leaf yellowing while the rest of the plant remains healthy isn't necessarily a problem.

If several leaves decline together, investigate watering, temperature, pests and root health.

Does Alocasia Azlanii Albo go dormant?

It can.

During colder or darker periods, growth may slow significantly and some plants can lose their leaves.

The underground corm (the swollen stem base that stores energy) may remain alive and produce new growth when conditions improve.

Check that it remains firm rather than soft or rotting.

What should I do if my Azlanii loses all its leaves?

First check the corm and roots.

If the corm remains firm and healthy, the plant may be resting rather than dead.

Keep it warm, avoid saturated compost and monitor for signs of new growth.

Do not continue watering a leafless plant as frequently as one that is actively growing.

How big does Alocasia Azlanii Albo grow?

Azlanii is a compact jewel Alocasia.

An established plant may reach around 20 to 35cm tall, although individual plants can be smaller or somewhat larger depending on conditions.

Leaves are generally much smaller than those of large Elephant Ear varieties.

How quickly does Azlanii Albo grow?

Growth is generally slow to moderate.

A healthy plant can produce several new leaves during the warmer months, but heavily variegated specimens may grow more slowly.

Young plants can also spend time establishing their roots before producing noticeable new foliage.

Should I repot my Azlanii immediately after buying it?

Usually not.

Give the plant time to settle into its new environment unless there is a clear problem with the compost, pot or roots.

Repotting immediately after a change of location can add unnecessary stress.

A healthy plant in suitable compost can remain in its existing pot while it adjusts.

What potting mix should I use?

Choose a loose, airy mix that drains freely while retaining some moisture.

Peat free houseplant compost with fine orchid bark and perlite or pumice is a useful combination.

Avoid oversized chunks around very small roots, and always choose a pot with drainage holes.

Does Azlanii Albo need a moss pole?

No.

This is a compact, upright Alocasia rather than a climbing plant.

It grows from a short stem and underground storage structure, producing leaves above the compost.

A moss pole isn't part of its natural growing habit.

Can Alocasia Azlanii Albo be propagated?

Yes.

Established plants can sometimes be divided if they produce separate growing points or offsets.

Alocasia may also produce corms (small underground storage structures capable of developing into new plants).

Wait until the parent is healthy and established before attempting propagation.

Will corms produce the same white variegation?

Not necessarily.

A corm taken from a variegated Alocasia may grow into a green plant or develop a different pattern of variegation.

The markings on the parent plant cannot guarantee the appearance of future corm grown plants.

Can I propagate Azlanii from a leaf cutting?

No.

A detached leaf and leaf stalk will not normally develop into a complete new Alocasia.

Propagation requires suitable living growing tissue, such as an established offset, division or viable corm.

Should I remove completely white leaves?

Not automatically.

White leaves contribute less energy to the plant, but removing them does not guarantee greener or more balanced future growth.

Check the plant's overall health, growth pattern and available green foliage before making pruning decisions.

A healthy plant carrying some white foliage doesn't necessarily need intervention.

Why is my new leaf completely green?

Variegation can vary naturally between leaves and growing points.

One greener leaf does not mean the entire plant has permanently lost its variegation.

Watch several new leaves before drawing conclusions.

Can Azlanii Albo revert to green?

Yes, variegation can become reduced or disappear from new growth.

A plant that consistently produces green foliage may have reverted at its active growing point.

However, one greener leaf alone isn't enough to establish that this has happened.

Can Alocasia Azlanii Albo flower indoors?

It can, although flowering isn't especially common in ordinary UK homes.

Like other Alocasia, it produces a spadix (the central flower bearing spike) surrounded by a spathe (a modified leaf that encloses the spike).

Most people grow Azlanii for its foliage rather than its flowers.

Should I cut off the flowers?

You can leave the flower to develop if the plant is healthy.

Some growers remove flowers to avoid the plant investing resources in them, but removing a flower doesn't guarantee stronger foliage growth.

If your plant is particularly small or struggling, consider its overall condition before allowing flowering to continue.

Why are there tiny insects around the compost?

Small flies may be fungus gnats, which are attracted to moist growing media.

Adult gnats are mostly a nuisance, but their larvae can damage tender roots when populations become heavy.

Check for consistently wet compost and use appropriate controls where necessary.

Is Azlanii Albo safe for cats and dogs?

No.

Alocasia contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten.

Keep it somewhere pets cannot reach and contact a vet if ingestion occurs.
